The IEI Tiruvallur Local Centre organized an industrial visit to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on 18th July 2025 at the Rolling Stock Depot, Koyambedu, with the theme “Technology and Innovation Behind Chennai Metro.” The visit aimed to provide engineering students and faculty members firsthand exposure to the advanced infrastructure and technological innovations used in modern metro rail systems.
Mr. A. R. Rajendran, Chief General Manager – Rolling Stock, CMRL, served as the key speaker. He shared in-depth insights into metro train design, rolling stock systems, maintenance operations, and sustainable urban transit practices, drawing from his extensive experience in the field.
The 120-minute visit, conducted from 09:30 AM to 12:30 PM, attracted 50 participants, including students from Automobile, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Science streams, as well as faculty coordinators. Participants explored metro infrastructure, advanced signaling systems, depot operations, and energy-efficient technologies such as regenerative braking and automated train control.
The visit highlighted the role of metro systems in addressing urban mobility challenges, promoting sustainable transport, and integrating interdisciplinary engineering solutions. It inspired students to explore careers in intelligent mobility, urban infrastructure, and transportation innovation.
